18th July 2008

It's been a long time since our last news update, so deep breath and here we go...

Since January this year Creation has seen some significant changes. We have worked hard over the last twelve months to change the image of the building, including front end reception, the cafe, the entrance to the climbing centre and the centre itself. Some big time-consuming projects can add small but important features to the building and it's easy to overlook things that we have been up to.

In addition to our new reception area we have added a huge new room at the rear of the cafe which we be used for both corporate events and yoga classes to be held beginning November. This room can be hired out to anyone, just contact us for more information. A recent event for Kerrang radio in this room proved a great success.

A big change at Creation has been that Brian Darby has taken over as General Manager. His style of running the business is moving us in to new and exciting directions. One of his first jobs was to ensure that work continued on the new climbing room that we were building earlier in the year. Work now continues on this room, scaffolding is not far from completion and panelling out will begin within the next two to three weeks. The new room, offering another 40 lines of climbing, should be open for the winter season.

We also have another little project up our sleeves. We're still crossing all the t's and dotting the i's but we will make an announcement shortly.

During the past few months we re-lanuched the kids' Crag Rats programme. The new syllabus offers an exciting opportunity to get your kids involved in the world of climbing and attendance of these sessions has increased significantly of late, with great feedback from the kids.

Also, don't forget that Creation now offers a loyalty scheme for direct debit customers. There's over £400 worth of benefits when you sign up, see centre promotional literature or speak to a member of staff who will happily talk you through the options available.

3rd December 2007

...and we expand again.
Work has now begun on the expansion to the climbing centre. We have taken a further 3500sqft of space out of the skatepark to built an entirely new room. This is pretty much like a whole new climbing centre opening and will offer a different and unique setup to what Creation already has. We have designed the new walls with loads of curves and angles and once finished will offer approximately 40 extra lines of top roping and lead climbing. In addition, we are constructing a walk up to abseil platform for groups, caving area and installing the Bendcrete competition wall from The Old Rockface Climbing Centre.

Plans for the new room at Creation are been kept under wraps for the time been, but i'm sure if you speak nicely to the staff they will sneak you round to have a look!

We would like to thank everyone for their continued support of Creation, and wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy 2008!!!

18th September 2007

Well, it's been a long time coming but our new feature walls are now open. This opens up a further nine lines of climbing.

The expansion of Creation continues, with frantic work been carried out in the adjoining skatepark which paves the way for us to move out obstacles behind our main lead wall and expand the centre back even further in to the building. . Once open Creation will have a further 30-40 lines of climbing up to 14mtrs high, and will feature a rope bridge, another abseil platform, jacobs ladder and can cater for bigger group bookings during the day time.

As Autumn rolls in we also have some special offers in the climbing centre itself. Buy a 6 month unlimited pass and get another month free, but a 12 month unlimited pass and get 2 months free. Coupled with this you get free tea and coffee for the duration of your pass! - Limited time offer, see centre promotion for more details

7th July 2007

It's a big day for Creation. Today we have secured a deal that gives us complete control of The Old Bus Depot in Moseley. This means a revamp of the skatepark and entrance, and more importantly a huge expansion of the climbing centre. In coming months the skatepark will be downsized and the climbing centre expanded to include another 40+ lines. This will also include the Bendcrete wall from the old Rockface Climbing Centre.

We now have a huge building to play with. It will take some carefull planning, but Creation is set to be the UK's biggest indoor extreme sports venue offering Climbing, Bouldering, Caving, Skateboarding, BMX and Inlining. We will also be building a huge new retail outlet selling climbing equipment, skateboard gear and power kites along with a new joint reception and cafe area. Watch this space for more information.

Also, we would like to let everyone know that we are currently installing all the new rubber crumb, so for the next week parts of the centre will be closed off while the glue sets. We apologise for the inconvenience and will try to keep disruption to a minimum.

14th June 2007

Today see's the launch of our new updated website.

Creation has been very busy of late and we have been working hard to provide new climbing walls within the facility. In May we opened the new slab and in July we will open the new featured panels offering a further 10 lines of climbing, taking us up to 62 lines.

The astute amongst you will have noticed parts of the old Rockface climbing centre popping up. Whilst we had to keep the deal quiet at the time we are happy to announce that we have indeed aquired the contents of the old Rockface and they are currently safely stored away. This was a monumental task which took over 14 months of negotiation and a great deal of resources, but it was worth it. For those of you who thought you would never climb it again, fear not! We have plans to re-erect the centre in the near future. We will keep you posted.

We are always thinking of new ideas to make your visit to Creation even more enjoyable, and we have some really exciting big plans in the offing, but just to tease you you'll have to wait for the next update!!!!

Thanks again for your continued support of the facility, it's thanks to you that Creation has become the midlands biggest and busiest indoor climbing venue.

15th October 2006

Well, Summer has been and gone for another year. The dark nights are drawing in again and Creation continues to be a hive of activity both during the day and evening.

The Autumn/Winter route setting rota starts again today which means 25 to 30 new routes each and every week from 3+ to 8a. We have also just secured another 500 holds which we will start setting with this week.

For those of you that have not visited for a while we have made some small changes to the centre, including the addition of two big volumes on the white lead wall, a re-paint of the bouldering area continues as does continued development. We are currently re-vamping the cave area and will be adding a further section shortly.

"Where's the news walls we promised" we hear quite frequently at the moment. Well, they are coming, honest! We had some major expense having to knock down and rebuild the shop and office area, now that is out of the way we will concentrate on the new walls. To be quite honest, we keep changing the design to make best use of the space and height, but rest assured that construction will begin soon.

We are pleased to announce that Neil Gresham is back for another masterclass day and slideshow in November (last year we sold out completely on this show and it was well worth it), and don't forget that we are having a 'Night Climbing' session in December. I don't want to spoil it too much for you, but I think it will be an interesting evening!

... and finally just to taunt you, we are working on some 'BIG' ideas for next year for Creation. Once we have some more concrete plans on the table we will let you know what's happening........

Enjoy your climbing, see you down the wall!

Mike

1st May 2006

A sad day for us at Creation. We learnt yesterday that Alan Smith, a great friend who ploughed many hours in to helping build the centre, and offer support in the following months lost his recent fight against Cancer. He was instrumental in the construction of the wall and his loss will be felt by many of his friends, and especially by me.

He was an inspiration, offering a unique perspective on how we should develop the centre, and so as not to disappoint him we are now working on our expansion plan. Even in his last days he had words of encouragement for me, 'Plough on Mike, you've got a good business there, grow it, make it a real success and just enjoy what we have built'.

I certainly will.

Thanks Alan. Rest in Peace.

Mike

31st December 2005

Results of the Christmas Climbing Competition can be seen here

We are in the middle of building the new bouldering extension, which we have aptly nicknames 'the wave'. Opposite the new section we have built 'The Moon' bouldering wall and a campus board next to it. Construction should be finished in a few weeks time, followed shortly by the new boulder mats. We hope to have the new section open for around February 5th.

8th December 2005

Well, we always said we were open to comments and suggestions and a recent thread on ROCKFAX.COM about family climbing rates has prompted us to release a new 'Family Package'. This new package allows a family of three or four in to the centre with a discount of 25%, which is equivalent to one person's entry FREE.

Also, due to the popularity of the kids club 'Crag Rats', we have now extended the programme to Sunday's between 11am and 1pm.

Remember that Creation is open Christmas Day between 12noon and 7pm. So if your bored of the Xmas telly after you've stuffed yourself full of turkey, then get down the wall and work it off.

A huge thanks to everyone who has supported Creation this year, your custom is greatly appreciated and we look forward to bringing you an even bigger and better centre during 2006! - Merry Christmas

From Mike, Ian and all the staff at the wall...

1st December 2005

Just a quick note to mention that the heating system is installed now and is working great. We have plugged up those annoying holes in the dividing wall between Creation and EPIC skatepark and this means that we can heat our 7500sqft without losing the heat in to the other 33000sqft of building! - Creation now enjoys a modest 14-16 degrees (C)!

Look out for our Christmas climbing comp and don't forget that the boulder ladder comp continues each and every month.

22nd November 2005

5 Months old and we now have over 3000 members who use the centre on a regular basis. Thanks!

This month saw the new boulder ladder competition take off with a fair few entrants already. See the information page on-line and details of the competition dotted around the centre.

The temperature has dropped something rotten over the past few weeks and regular visitors will have felt the change at the centre. Creation occupies approximately 7500sqft of a 40000sqft building which has never had any sort of major heating system installed. Whilst we invested heavily in the new 60kW heaters they don't seem to be making the blindest bit of difference so we are actively working to resolve the problem.

We are having a new 250,000btu gas fired heater installed to take the edge off. Whilst were not aiming to get the centre hot we obviously want you to feel comfortable during your visit.

We have recently purchased 550 new holds with more on order and work is about to start on the extension to the bouldering wall (sorry for the delay).

10th October 2005

It's getting busy at Creation these days and were trying to respond by putting up more routes more often to make your visit enjoyable and different each time. A dedicated team work late through Sundays at present, setting up to 14 routes each weekend as well as the standard routesetting and safety checks throughout the week.

We have just purchased another 450 holds and these will be going up shortly and were eager to get started on the extension to the bouldering wall in November.

Unfortunately we ran in to a few delays with the shop, but were glad to announce that it is nearly finished and should be open by 18th October. Stocking a range of climbing equipment from DMM, Mammut, Wild Country, Red Chilli, Scarpa, Petzl, Navuku and many more....

Were getting a great deal of feedback via the comments box and we are very grateful to everyone who takes the time to comment or complain. We do read every one of them and try to act to correct any problems in the centre. Some may take a bit longer than others to sort, but we are working on them.

We also have just purchased three powerful hot air blowers to help take the chill off during those coming winter months, so your visit hopefully won't have to include packing a down jacket!

4th September 2005

Well, Creation has been open for just over three months now and things are going well for us. Our membership is already up to 1600 with most of these visiting on a regular basis. The feedback that we get from out customers is good and you all seem very happy with the first phase of our set up.

Now is not a time to become complacent and we are striving to move forward with the company which means phase two is been implemented as we speak. Our retail outlet is currently being fitted out and should hopefully be open by the end of September, and we have started negotiations to draw up plans for phase two which will include another 15 top rope routes, a huge arch way and a mega overhang to complement the existing 50 lines that we already have. This will hopefully give us a total of 80 lines and more than 250 routes, in addition to an extension of the bouldering facilities and upgrading the toilets and foyer.

Obviously this all takes time and costs a great deal of money and so we will be looking to implement these changes from around March next year. Our priority at the moment is to get the rubber crumb matting fitted and some heating for the winter months ahead.

Thanks to everyone who uses Creation on a regular basis, we hope that you continue to be impressed at what we bring you and remember that any suggestions or comments can be left in the suggestion box behind the bouldering wall.

1st February 005 *UPDATE*

The moving of the remaining skate ramps is underway today and work has begun on the partitioning wall. Power and water have been successfully installed after several very late night sessions. We are now working on the climbing panels and hopefully work should start on the first section of the bouldering area next week. Work is slow and steady at the moment with not a lot to actually see for the man hours that have been put in, but then
again, Rome wasn't built in a day!
